Spring 2007 Educational News by Linda Barnett
This school year may go down in our history as The Year of Camelot. With the help of our wonderful friends Ellen Westkaemper and Harry Culpepper of the Peace Center, and visiting artist Gordy Owens, Generations received a grant from the League of American Theaters and Producers. For our students, this meant studying performance techniques with an accomplished actor, and experiencing a live performance of the Broadway musical Camelot. Not only that, but our students also got once-in-a-lifetime chance to tour the backstage area, chat with the actors, and to have a wonderful dinner at Soby's afterwards. Months later, the boys are still talking about all the fun we had.
We had so much fun in fact, that we've decided to turn the 2007 Summer Showcase into a medieval marvel. We're planning for lots of exciting activities, including performances based on Arthurian legends, and a knighting ceremony for those students who finish all the summer's academic and character-building "quests" successfully.
We hope you'll join us on July 17 at 6 p.m. for our Summer Showcase, so we can celebrate together the glorious reign of King Arthur. To RSVP, please e-mail Roseanne Brown.
Summer 2006 Education News
Generations Group Homes has had a wonderful relationship over recent years with Greenville Technical College. Greenville Tech offers over 130 programs on 4 campuses within Greenville County, and has been there for our boys at Generations Group Homes. Since our boys are ages 10 - 19, we often will have a few boys who have completed their high school education while at GGH. We teach our boys to set a goal, work toward it, complete it, and set another goal. Same with their education. When our boys complete high school they are enrolled in Distance Learning at Greenville Technical College.
To enhance our educational component, Greenville Tech offered some hands on learning experiences for our boys. The most recent was a week long workshop in which 9 of our boys, rising seniors, were given hands on learning in several different career areas that included Truck Driving, Welding, Airplane Mechanic, etc. These nine not only were able to make some definite career decisions based on this class, but they also received their first college credits!

Our heartfelt and sincere gratitude goes out to Mr. Singleton, Mrs. Hendrix, and Dr. Barton of Greenville Technical College, for their making a true difference in the lives of our boys.
